CLEVELAND (AP) — Two days before recording another milestone, resume-building sack on Sunday at Cincinnati, Myles Garrett delivered a jarring hit — on the Browns. In this case, any roughness could be deemed necessary. Garrett piled on to what has been a painful and puzzling season in Cleveland by saying he doesn't have any interest in going through another rebuild and wants to know exactly what the organization's offseason plans are to fix things. If that wasn't enough, Garrett indicated for the first time that he would consider leaving the Browns if his vision doesn't mesh with the team's ambitions. “It’s a possibility,” he said of playing elsewhere. "But I want to be a Cleveland Brown. I want to play my career here.” It's unclear how Garrett's comments were received by owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam, who have plenty to consider as the Browns (3-12) head into the final two weeks of a season that began with playoff expectations and could be followed by upheaval. The Browns haven't been this bad since going 0-16 in 2017. Garrett, who reached 100 career sacks by taking down Cincinnati's Joe Burrow late in the first half of Sunday's 24-6 loss , may have either added to the Haslams' long list of concerns — the Deshaun Watson contract situation is a priority — or brought them clarity. There's no denying that Garrett's remarks carry substantial weight, which is partly why he spoke up. He's the Browns' best player, a franchise cornerstone, a future Hall of Famer and arguably the most disruptive defensive force in the game today. He's also leading with actions. Garrett showed extraordinary effort in chasing down and tackling Burrow before tumbling out of bounds and crashing into Cleveland's bench and some portable heaters. He might be frustrated, but he's not giving up. “A testament of who he is as a player and who he is as a person,” linebacker Jordan Hicks said. What the reigning Defensive Player of the Year says matters. It will be interesting to see if the Haslams listen. At this point, there are indications the Browns intend to stick with coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry, whose major misses in recent drafts have become more magnified with each loss. There will be changes; it's just a matter of how drastic and if they'll be enough to satisfy Garrett's wishes. He turns 29 on Dec. 29 and has two years left on a $125 million contract extension. The All-Pro is in his prime and doesn't want to waste another season in a pointless pursuit of a Super Bowl title. His goal is to win a championship with Cleveland — or someone. Garrett's serious. He's asking the Browns to show him they are, too. Cleveland's defense is doing its part. For the second week in a row, the Browns contained one of the NFL's most talented offenses, holding the Bengals and their top-ranked passing game below most of their season averages. Burrow did throw three TD passes — for the seventh game in a row — but Cincinnati scored fewer than 27 points for the first time in seven games. The Browns continue to beat themselves with costly turnovers, some more costly than others. They drove to the Cincinnati 1-yard line in the opening minutes only to have D'Onta Foreman fumble as he neared the goal line. The Bengals capitalized by driving 99 yards to take a 7-0 lead that could have been Cleveland's. Running back Jerome Ford is making the most of a heavier workload and finishing strong. He ripped off a 66-yard run on the game's first play and finished with 131 all-purpose yards, including 92 on 11 carries and scored Cleveland's only TD. Ford's emergence as a potential No. 1 back — Nick Chubb's injuries have clouded his future — gives the team one less thing to worry about as it retools the roster. Kicker Dustin Hopkins hasn't shaken a startling slump. After being benched for a week to work through his struggles, Hopkins missed his only kick, pushing an extra point to the right. Hopkins felt confident going in, but he's back to trying to identify issues that could be equally mechanical and mental. He's just 16 of 25 on field goals, 16 of 19 on PATs and the Browns' decision to sign him to a three-year, $15.9 million extension this summer looks worse every week. QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson injured his calf early in Sunday's game, leaving his status in doubt for a second straight start this week. If Thompson-Robinson can't go, the Browns could go back to Jameis Winston, but he's dealing with a sore right shoulder. ... Tight end David Njoku is dealing with yet another injury after hurting his knee. The team is awaiting results on an MRI, perhaps a sign of the severity. Njoku has missed time with injuries all season. He finished with eight catches for 66 yards. 20 — Interceptions for the Browns this season. His four years were dogged by economic "stagflation", which began during the term of his predecessor Richard Nixon, and America's stumbles on foreign policy. The surprise 1980 landslide loss to Ronald Reagan was deemed a referendum on Carter's leadership. Voters had daily reminders that their commander in chief was unable to free the dozens of Americans held captive in an embassy in the Iranian capital, Tehran. The enduring myth that Carter failed to act was strengthened by the fact the release of the hostages came after his departure from the White House. But when the crisis began 444 days earlier, no-one could have anticipated how long it would last, and how it would shape American politics. The fall of the Shah of Iran The seeds of the hostage crisis were planted in the chaos of Iran's Islamic Revolution. Iran and the United States had been on friendly terms while Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was the Shah of Iran — the country's royal ruler. The Shah came to the throne in Tehran during World War II and his power in the oil-rich country was shored up in the 1950s after the US and UK backed a coup to depose the country's democratically elected prime minister. Carter hosted a state dinner for the Shah and his wife at the White House in November 1977 and, in turn, the Shah entertained Carter in Tehran on New Year's Day in 1978. But over the ensuing year, the Shah faced violent unrest at home as religious leader Ayatollah Khomeini returned from exile to overthrow the autocrat. The Shah fled to Egypt on January 16, 1979, and a month later the government collapsed. In October, the Shah arrived in New York to undergo surgery, angering Khomeini and his supporters, who demanded he be returned to stand trial. Khomeini called for a "purge" of "American-loving rotten brains", and encouraged activist students to "expand their attacks" against the US and Israel, America's major ally in the Middle East. The 52 hostages On November 4, 1979, hundreds of Iranian students breached the gates of the US embassy in Tehran. They quickly occupied the compound. Some had intended a peaceful sit-in, but the situation deteriorated rapidly. The armed mob took 66 Americans hostage. Consular employee Robert C Ode, who at 65 was the oldest person taken captive, recalled in his diary that the students tied his hands behind his back so tightly with nylon cord that it cut off the circulation. I strongly protested the violation of my diplomatic immunity, but these protests were ignored. Some students attempted to talk with us, stating how they didn't hate Americans — only our US government, President Carter, etc. We were not permitted to talk to our fellow hostages and from then on our hands were tied day and night and only removed while we were eating or had to go to the bathroom. Six American diplomats were able to avoid capture and spent three months hiding in the Canadian and Swedish embassies — their rescue would later be the plot of the 2012 movie Argo . About the same time as the US embassy was occupied, the British embassy was also stormed by Iranian students, but they left after several hours. Khomeini condoned the occupation of the embassies, threatening to do "whatever is necessary" to bring the Shah back for trial and force Britain to hand over exiled prime minister Shapour Bakhtiar. Two weeks later, on Khomeini's orders, the demonstrators freed five women and eight black men. Non-American hostages were also freed. Another American hostage was released on July 11, 1980 due to illness. The remaining 52 were moved around the compound constantly, handcuffed, beaten, tortured and forced to undergo mock executions at gunpoint. Operation Eagle Claw ends in disaster Carter took significant steps to sanction Iran in the first few months of the hostage crisis. He froze Iranian assets, stopped importing oil from Iran and expelled 183 Iranian diplomats from the US. Fifty thousand Iranian students in America were also told to report to the nearest immigration office and warned they would be deported if they were found to be in violation of the terms of their visas. But the militants didn't relent, and threatened to burn the embassy and kill the hostages if the US attempted any military action against Iran. Carter's actions worked in Khomeini's favour as he sought to free Iran from America's control and use his supreme powers to roll out Islamic doctrine. At 1am on April 25, 1980, the White House revealed it had attempted a military operation to rescue the hostages, known as Operation Eagle Claw. But the operation had failed: eight US servicemen were dead and several others injured. The rescuers got nowhere near the embassy — the mission was aborted when three of the eight helicopters suffered various equipment failures. As they withdrew from the rendezvous point in the desert, one of the helicopters collided with a transport plane, killing crew on both aircraft. Their bodies were taken to the embassy in Tehran, where they were put on display during a press conference. Iran arranged for them to be returned to the US the following month. A post-White House legacy Carter took full responsibility for the failed rescue attempt. With the hostages' lives at stake, he couldn't risk another military operation in Iran, and had to walk the slow diplomatic path to secure their freedom. Stephen Loosley from the United States Studies Centre at Sydney University says news coverage of the crisis was extensive for a time when media didn't run 24/7. "Both [US news anchors] Ted Koppel and Walter Cronkite would keep a laser-like focus on the hostage crisis," Mr Loosley says. "They'd keep the number of hostages up on the screen every night, and the number of days that the hostages had been incarcerated. "Americans never really lost sight of the fact that their people were imprisoned in a very hostile environment in Tehran." On July 27, 1980, the Shah died in a Cairo military hospital. The return of his wealth to Iran became a key part of the agreement to free the hostages, known as the Algiers Accords. The accords were signed on January 19, 1981, the day before Carter was due to leave the White House. He'd lost the November 1980 election to Republican candidate Ronald Reagan, a former Hollywood actor and governor of California. The hostages were meant to be released while Carter was still president, but a delay meant they were freed in the first few hours of Reagan's administration on January 20. "The Iranians refused to give Carter the satisfaction of saying the hostages were released on his watch," Mr Loosley says. "Ronald Reagan is viewed as the president who secured the release of the hostages, because of the timing." In the next decade, Reagan would be credited with playing a major role in ending the Cold War, while Carter faded into relative obscurity Carter described the Iran hostage crisis as "the most difficult period of my life". The hostages themselves were traumatised by the ordeal and spent more than 30 years fighting for compensation, which was granted in 2015. Mr Loosley says Americans look more favourably on what Carter did after his time in the White House. The Carter Center, a not-for-profit set up by Carter and his wife Rosalynn in 1982, worked to improve human rights and health worldwide. One of its greatest achievements was the near-eradication of Guinea worm disease, caused by a water-borne parasite. The Carters also built homes with social housing organisation charity Habitat for Humanity. "He's looked upon with a fair amount of affection and respect," Mr Loosley said. "Unfortunately his presidency is seen as somewhat of a low point in in the post-war period because of the Iran hostage crisis." ABC

And just before his 100th birthday, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation honored him with a lifetime achievement award for how he wielded "the power of the written word to foster peace, social justice, and global understanding.” In one recent work, “A Full Life,” Carter observed that he “enjoyed writing” and that his books “provided a much-needed source of income.” But some projects were easier than others. “Everything to Gain,” a 1987 collaboration with his wife, Rosalynn, turned into the “worst threat we ever experienced in our marriage,” an intractable standoff for the facilitator of the Camp David accords and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. According to Carter, Rosalynn was a meticulous author who considered “the resulting sentences as though they have come down from Mount Sinai, carved into stone.” Their memories differed on various events and they fell into “constant arguments.” They were ready to abandon the book and return the advance, until their editor persuaded them to simply divide any disputed passages between them. “In the book, each of these paragraphs is identified by a ‘J’ or an ‘R,’ and our marriage survived,” he wrote. ATLANTA — On Jan. 18 and 19 the AT&T Playoff Playlist Live! will be held at State Farm Arena in advance of the College Football Playoff national championship on Jan. 20. The star-studded lineup was announced Thursday at a news conference at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Performances will include Lil Wayne and GloRilla on Saturday; and Camila Cabello, Myles Smith and Knox on Sunday. On game day, the Allstate Championship Tailgate, taking place just outside Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the Home Depot Backyard, will feature country acts on the Capital One Music Stage, including global superstar Kane Brown and iHeartCountry “On The Verge” artist Ashley Cooke. The concerts are just two of the festivities visiting fans can enjoy in the days leading up to the big game. The fan experience for both ticket holders and the general public has been a focus for event planners. All weekend long, an estimated 100,000 people from across the country are expected to attend fan events preceding kickoff. “It will be an opportunity for fans of all ages to come together to sample what college football is all about, and you don’t have to have a ticket to the game to be a part of it,” said Bill Hancock, executive director of the CFP in a press release. “We’ve worked closely with the Atlanta Football Host Committee to develop fan-friendly events that thousands will enjoy come January.” On Saturday, Jan. 18, Playoff Fan Central will open at the Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta. We revisit some of the cases that dominated headlines and left us shocked, perplexed, and — at times — even entertained. Reynolds v Higgins It was a story of an alleged rape in the halls of Parliament House and a covert political cover-up, and like all “fairytales”, it needed a villain. That was how WA Senator Linda Reynolds’ lawyer Martin Bennett began the five-week-long trial in her defamation suit against former staffer Brittany Higgins and her husband David Sharaz, the most high-profile case to go before WA’s civil courts in 2024. The former defence minister sued Higgins over social media posts accusing her of mishandling the former staffer’s alleged rape by Bruce Lehrmann in March 2019 — a claim that was later aired by the media and created a storm that led to Reynolds’ political demise. Loading Higgins fiercely defended the action on the basis her posts were true, but opted against taking the stand at the eleventh hour amid concerns for her health. The trial, which the pair mortgaged and sold their homes to pursue, pored over the events of 2019 in excruciating detail, dragged in high-profile figures — from former prime minister Scott Morrison to broadcaster Peta Credlin — and threw private texts into the public arena we imagine the parties would have preferred to remain private.

The top five Japanese defense firms tallied sales of $10 billion in 2023, up 35 percent from the year before, according to an international security think tank, as the country continues its defense buildup amid Chinese and North Korean threats. Globally, the combined arms revenues of the world's 100 largest arms-producing and military services companies rose 4.2 percent to $632 billion, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said in an annual report, citing increased demand for weapons worldwide. Companies in regions where wars are being waged marked the largest percentage increases, with the two Russian companies with available data and six Middle Eastern firms on the list seeing combined sales climb 40 percent and 18 percent, respectively. Asia and Oceania saw a 5.7 percent rise, with Japanese and South Korean companies leading the growth in the region. Among the five Japanese companies in the top 100, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd racked up the highest revenue of $3.89 billion in 2023, up 23.9 percent, followed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd which generated $2.06 billion, up 16.4 percent. Fujitsu Ltd, NEC Corp and Mitsubishi Electric Corp ranked third through fifth. "The respective military-related domestic orders of all five were at least two times, and in some cases more than four times, higher in value than in 2022 when Japan launched its biggest military buildup program since the end of World War II," SIPRI said, citing Japan's growing demand for new aircraft and missiles. In the National Security Strategy revised in late 2022, Japan pledged to almost double its annual defense outlays in five years and advance domestic defense production and technology bases, as it faces security challenges from China, North Korea and Russia. The aggregate turnover logged by four South Korean companies grew 39 percent to $11 billion, with Hanwha Group posting $5.71 billion in revenue, a 52.7 percent surge, supported by export contracts with Australia, Poland and Britain for artillery and armored vehicles. The sharp growth in arms revenues among South Korean companies came as they are "trying to expand their share of the global arms market, including demand in Europe related to the war in Ukraine," Xiao Liang, a researcher with the SIPRI Military Expenditure and Arms Production Program, said in a press release issued on Dec 2. Taiwanese weapon system provider National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology -- the only Taiwanese firm in the top 100 list -- increased revenues by 27 percent to $3.22 billion on domestic orders for missiles, drones and radars amid growing tensions with China, which sees the self-ruled island as its own territory, the report said. Chinese companies had the second-largest aggregate arms revenues after U.S. companies at $103 billion, but they recorded their lowest growth of 0.7 percent since 2019 due to the country's slowing economy, it said. The 41 companies in the top 100 based in the United States saw arms revenues total $317 billion, half the combined total of the 100 companies and 2.5 percent more than in 2022.Stronger privacy protections will be put in place to protect the identities of Australians online when a world-first teen social media plan is legislated, as the Coalition works to soothe backbench worries about over-regulation of the internet. Labor has played down the prospect of a digital ID but Coalition MPs were told in a joint party room meeting that amendments would be made to the bill to explicitly rule out the use of a digital ID and documents such as passports. Several Coalition MPs in the Canberra party room meeting, speaking anonymously to disclose confidential discussions, confirmed the Coalition had been working on stronger privacy protections with Labor.
