For German ‘sick leave detective’, business is boomingThe Canada Games Centre has closed both of its rinks due to an issue with one of the facility’s ice plant compressors. “The decision has been made to cancel all ice bookings as well as any drop-in ice activities with the exception of the Arctic Edge Skating Club’s Gold Nugget Competition,” read a Dec. 6 press release. “Impacted user groups have been notified directly by Facility Bookings staff.” Darrell Peters is the operations supervisor at the Canada Games Centre. He told the News that one of the rink’s three compressors went out of commission on Wednesday, Dec. 4. “An instrument panel that’s on the compressor is not working, it’s dead. So that compressor is no longer working,” he said. The warm conditions that Whitehorse has been experiencing have complicated the matter further: Peters said operations cannot keep up with the flooding of the ice. He said the operations have not been flooding after every period of hockey since Dec. 4 because the ice wasn’t setting quickly enough. “So what’s happening is our ice is getting slimmer and slimmer,” he said. The ice is usually maintained at an inch-and-three-quarters to two inches, but the ice level is now down to an inch-and-a-quarter. “It’ll keep getting lower, and then we’ll lose our lines on the ice, and then it’s a problem,” said Peters. Arctic Edge will be able to use the ice due to the nature of their sport compared with hockey, as well as the fact the rink only needs to be flooded every few hours with figure-skating as opposed to after every period with hockey, Peters said. It is also due to the fact that Arctic Edge is running their test program. “That’s why we’re shutting everything down, so that they have good quality ice still, on the ATCO ice, for them to do the testing program.” Peters said that their technicians will be arriving from Edmonton on Monday, Dec. 9 with the replacement parts. “I expect them to be working on it Tuesday morning and hopefully be running by lunchtime on Tuesday, if everything works out,” Peters said.

Affordable pockets under 11km from the CBD are still able to be found. Photo: iStock While rent price growth has slowed in the past year, the cost of renting remains significantly higher compared with pre-pandemic times. Renters are facing tough conditions, however, there are still suburbs close to the city with affordable rental properties available. National weekly rents rose by 7 per cent in the past year, reaching $620 in November, according to recent data from PropTrack. This was just half the growth rate of the prior year, marking a slowdown in market conditions. RELATED: Blues footy boss makes multimillion-dollar Hawthorn move Saints legend ‘Aussie’ Jones selling entertainer’s paradise with putting green Portelli slammed: Block is dud investment In Melbourne, the easing is even more apparent. Annual rent growth was only 6 per cent from November 2023 until November 2024, which was well below the 17 per cent recorded in the same period a year earlier. While the slowing of growth offers some relief for renters in the city who have had to endure substantial rent rises, weekly rents are still about 35 per cent higher than February 2020. Finding an affordable property has become more difficult, but homes in a number of inner-ring suburbs, those within the closest third in terms of distance to the CBD, still offer reasonably priced options. For suburbs within 11kms of the Melbourne CBD, Brooklyn, Heidelberg West and Avondale Heights had the cheapest rental houses, where weekly median rents were $550, $550 and $570 per week, respectively. Braybrook and Coburg North were also affordable with median house rents less than $600 per week. Level 4, 3/12 Powlett Street, Heidelberg is up for rent for $470 per week. MORE: Melbourne has most homes for sale in the nation Gardenvale, Caulfield East and Kingsville topped the list for the most affordable rental units among inner-ring suburbs. The cost of renting a unit was $390, $410 and $420 per week respectively. Units in Fairfield and West Footscray had weekly rents below $450 as well. The increase of rental stock has been one key factor easing rental conditions. Since November 2023, total rental listings have risen by 7.1 per cent. This is likely due to a return of investors and more people opting to purchase their first home instead of renting. However, on a historic basis, demand is high and supply remains low. As cost-of-living pressures mount and rent growth continues to outpace wage growth, more people will seek out cheaper rentals which could result in stronger price increases in budget-friendly areas. This will further decrease the availability of affordable rentals. To ensure that all Australians have access to affordable housing, it is crucial that the government prioritises building more well-located homes to meet the demands of our growing population. Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States, dead at 100TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel said Sunday that the body of an Israeli-Moldovan rabbi who went missing in the United Arab Emirates has been found after he was killed in what it described as a “heinous antisemitic terror incident.” The UAE's Interior Ministry later said authorities arrested three perpetrators involved in the killing of Zvi Kogan. The statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said Israel “will act with all means to seek justice with the criminals responsible for his death.” Israeli authorities did not say how they determined the killing of Kogan was a terror attack and offered no additional details. Kogan, 28, an ultra-Orthodox rabbi who went missing on Thursday, ran a kosher grocery store in the futuristic city of Dubai, where Israelis have flocked for commerce and tourism since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in the 2020 Abraham Accords . The agreement has held through more than a year of soaring regional tensions unleashed by Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023 attack into southern Israel . But Israel's devastating retaliatory offensive in Gaza and its invasion of Lebanon, after months of fighting with the Hezbollah militant group, have stoked anger among Emiratis, Arab nationals and others living in the the UAE. Iran, which supports Hamas and Hezbollah, has also been threatening to retaliate against Israel after a wave of airstrikes Israel carried out in October in response to an Iranian ballistic missile attack. The Emirati government did not respond to a request for comment. However, senior Emirati diplomat Anwer Gargash wrote on the social platform X in Arabic on Sunday that “the UAE will remain a home of safety, an oasis of stability, a society of tolerance and coexistence and a beacon of development, pride and advancement.” Early on Sunday, the UAE’s state-run WAM news agency acknowledged Kogan’s disappearance but pointedly did not acknowledge he held Israeli citizenship, referring to him only as being Moldovan. The Emirati Interior Ministry described Kogan as being “missing and out of contact.” “Specialized authorities immediately began search and investigation operations upon receiving the report,” the Interior Ministry said. The ministry later said that three “perpetrators” had been arrested “in record time” without giving additional details. Netanyahu told a regular Cabinet meeting later Sunday that he was “deeply shocked” by Kogan's disappearance and death. He said he appreciated the cooperation of the UAE in the investigation and that ties between the two countries would continue to be strengthened. Israel's largely ceremonial president, Isaac Herzog, condemned the killing and thanked Emirati authorities for "their swift action." He said he trusts they “will work tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice.” Israel also again warned against all nonessential travel to the Emirates after Kogan's killing. “There is concern that there is still a threat against Israelis and Jews in the area,” a government warning issued Sunday said. Kogan was an emissary of the Chabad Lubavitch movement, a prominent and highly observant branch of ultra-Orthodox Judaism based in Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood in New York City. It said he was last seen in Dubai. The UAE has a burgeoning Jewish community, with synagogues and businesses catering to kosher diners. The Rimon Market, a kosher grocery store that Kogan managed on Dubai’s busy Al Wasl Road, was shut Sunday. As the wars have roiled the region, the store has been the target of online protests by supporters of the Palestinians. Mezuzahs on the front and back doors of the market appeared to have been ripped off when an Associated Press journalist stopped by on Sunday. Kogan’s wife, Rivky, is a U.S. citizen who lived with him in the UAE. She is the niece of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, who was killed in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The UAE is an autocratic federation of seven sheikhdoms on the Arabian Peninsula and is also home to Abu Dhabi. Local Jewish officials in the UAE declined to comment. While the Israeli statement did not mention Iran, Iranian intelligence services have carried out past kidnappings in the UAE. Western officials believe Iran runs intelligence operations in the UAE and keeps tabs on the hundreds of thousands of Iranians living across the country. Iran is suspected of kidnapping and later killing British Iranian national Abbas Yazdi in Dubai in 2013, though Tehran has denied involvement. Iran also kidnapped Iranian German national Jamshid Sharmahd in 2020 from Dubai, taking him back to Tehran, where he was executed in October . ___ Gambrell reported from Dubai, United Arab Emirates Tia Goldenberg And Jon Gambrell, The Associated PressUN expert: Myanmar's desperate military ramps up attacks including beheadings, rapes and torture

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office says the 59-year-old and 37-year-old appear to have died from exposure. The sheriff's office says it based that conclusion on the weather and their lack of preparedness. Both men were from Portland. They were found in a heavily wooded area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest northeast of that city. Family reported them missing after they failed to return from a Christmas Eve outing. Sasquatch is a folkloric beast thought by some to roam the forests, particularly in the Pacific Northwest.

A decision by Donald Trump's transition team to skip over filing ethics and disclosure forms to the General Services Administration has allowed them to rake in cash from outside sources to fund his transition efforts while not disclosing where the cash is coming from and how much they are taking in. According to an alarming report from the New York Times, the unprecedented decision to blow off federal funding of the transition by the the president-elect's team opens the door to " secret money " which is alarming ethics experts who believe it will result in unknown actors calling the shots in the incoming Trump White House . As the Times' Ken Bensinger and David Fahrenthold wrote, "President-elect Donald J. Trump is keeping secret the names of the donors who are funding his transition effort, a break from tradition that could make it impossible to see what interest groups, businesses or wealthy people are helping launch his second term," adding, "Mr. Trump is the first president-elect to sidestep the restrictions, provoking alarm among ethics experts." ALSO READ: The America-attacking Trump is coming for our military — and then he's coming for us The report notes Trump and his team are forgoing up to $7.2 million in federal funds by not signing an agreement with the Biden administration, which allows them to raise unlimited funds –– including from undisclosed foreign nationals. Heath Brown, a professor of public policy at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, claimed that should raise red flags. “When the money isn’t disclosed, it’s not clear how much everybody is giving, who is giving it and what they are getting in return for their donations,” he explained. “It’s an area where the vast majority of Americans would agree that they want to know who is paying that bill.” "Mr. Trump’s transition team, formally known as Trump Vance 2025 Transition Inc., has revealed nothing about how much money it hopes to raise, who has contributed to the fund or how it is spending the money," the Times is reporting before adding, "The current Trump transition, like its predecessors, is set up as a 'dark money' nonprofit. Those groups typically do not have to disclose their donors, even to the Internal Revenue Service. But unlike Mr. Trump’s team this year, earlier transitions accepted financial support from the General Services Administration, which oversees much of the transition process." According to Brian Galle, a Georgetown University law professor, the IRS could require an audit for transparency, but that it seems unlikely. “Given the political sensitivity of this organization, I’d say the odds of their being audited are zero," he predicted. The adult male was found on Nov. 1 on sand dunes in temperate southwest Australia about 2,200 miles north of the Antarctic coast. He was released Wednesday from a boat that traveled several hours from Western Australia state's most southerly city of Albany. His caregiver Carol Biddulph wasn't sure at first if the penguin would live. She said a mirror was important to his rehabilitation because they provide a sense of company. Biddulph said: “They’re social birds and he stands next to the mirror most of the time.”Elias Cato scores 23 as Central Arkansas tops UNC Asheville 92-83 in double OT
